Virginijus Viningas

Virginijus Viningas, a Lithuanian painter, stands out for his unmistakable style, marked by vibrant colors and expressive, uninhibited brushstrokes that bring his forms and figures to life. Rather than anchoring his oeuvre to a single overarching theme, Viningas is particularly fascinated by the human body—not in the academic sense, but as a reflection of a person’s inner, spiritual landscape and as a tool for a variety of human actions.

The artist frequently chooses to depict figures such as boxers, dancers, and musicians, presenting them fully absorbed in their craft and entirely focused on their activities. Though these fields might seem disparate, they are united by a commonality: each demands perseverance and commitment, especially in those realms where the outcome appears effortless to the outsider. Viningas is captivated by this contradiction, echoing it in his own artistic practice, where painting may appear free and instinctive, yet is grounded in discipline and sustained effort.

Viningas articulates his method by highlighting the significance of movement, color, and subject in conveying character. As an example, he recalls painting the musician John Coltrane and considering how to represent the piece "Brazilia" visually. The task, he notes, is to interpret music through color—asking himself, “Blue or red? Which better captures the feeling of Brazil?”—thereby turning sound into imagery.

Born in 1960 in Pasvalys, Lithuania, Viningas graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1990, where he studied under Professor A. Savickas. Since then, he has taught painting, composition, and watercolor. He has mounted over thirty solo exhibitions in Lithuania and internationally, with his art represented in significant collections including the Lewben Art Foundation and the MO Museum. In 2018, Viningas received the Lithuanian Artists’ Association’s gold badge in recognition of his dynamic "jazz of brushstrokes and color" and his many years of dedicated service to the Association’s council.
