"K. Česonytė’s paintings are variations on Expressionist painting: characterized by a trembling touch, energetic brushstrokes, and expressive paint textures with which she often seems to 'sculpt' figures, objects, and landscape elements. In terms of genre, the scope of her work is quite traditional. Landscapes predominate, though the artist has also painted a series of still lifes, numerous urban scenes, and the occasional stylized portrait. Yet, other aspects of K. Česonytė’s painting align her less with classical modernist art and more with the imagery of the contemporary, media-saturated world. 'My tools are the computer and virtual space,' she says. The visual imagery in her paintings derives not from reality itself, but from a virtual—or secondary—reality. For this creative artist, however, that serves merely as a springboard or a starting signal that liberates both imagination and hand. In her work, this secondary reality—or a chance motif—and the artist’s imagination most often intertwine inseparably. Images suggested by modern media are transformed into authentic visions, deeply and sensitively experienced by the painter herself."

About this artwork+

The painting captures a row of aged, densely packed buildings under a broad, soft sky streaked with light clouds. The roofs, detailed with varying textures and shades of mossy greens and muted browns, dominate the foreground, suggesting the historical weight and architectural character of Vilnius. Prominent among these is a large dome adorned with a cross, presiding over the smaller, more angular structures. The color palette consists of earthy tones mixed with grays and whites, lending the scene a melancholic yet serene atmosphere. The brushwork is loose, imbuing the scene with a dynamic, almost restless quality, as if capturing a moment of quiet change in the old city.
